how our clothes are made
every thread has a story
We love showing you where and how your clothes are made, passing through many people’s hands to get to you. We want to invite you into their lives and homes, see for yourself the commitment and hard work that goes into creating beauty from natural materials and age-old methods.
Our hope is that as you discover how your clothing is being made and feel the beautiful texture of a hand spun, handwoven fabric next to your skin, that you will have a connection with these makers whose lives are woven into the fabric as they weave, spin, print and sew your clothing.
keeping an art form alive
Throughout the ages, artisans in India have developed unique manual processes to make fabrics from local resources, without electricity or fossil fuel. These ancient processes provide work and preserve traditional inter-generational skills. This work helps women be employed in their own home and provides a sustainable livelihood to families and communities.
There has been a decline of almost 50% of hand loom weavers in the last 28 years. These living traditions are threatened by mass production and cheaper substitutes.
Every time we buy a handcrafted garment, we are supporting a wider group of growers and makers like cotton or silk cultivators, farmers, spinners and dyers.
